Kian Johnston brings a strong athlete-first approach to IGNITE Trail, combining academic training, coaching credentials, and high-level competitive sport experience. A former NCAA athlete and current professional baseball player, Kian understands what it takes to train with purpose, build consistency, and prepare athletes for the next level.

Kian's coaching philosophy is centred on putting each athlete in the best position to succeed based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. His approach is structured and focused, with clear expectations around work ethic, while still creating a relaxed and positive training environment where athletes feel supported.

He believes one of the biggest keys to athlete development is finding the right balance between high standards and an environment athletes enjoy being part of. Through IGNITE, Kian helps athletes build strength, confidence, and the physical foundation they need to perform across sport.

Kian holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis in Health and Wellness, along with a Sport Science Diploma. He is a Certified Nutrition Coach through NCI, has NCCP training, and has completed Strength and Olympic Lifts Level 1. Grace has a passion for the sport of gymnastics and has been coaching recreational programs since 2014. Since 2021, she has also coached in the competitive program, supporting athletes as they develop strength, coordination, flexibility, and technical skill.

Her coaching approach focuses on helping athletes build confidence through progressive skill development and a supportive training environment. Through IGNITE, Grace helps athletes develop movement skills that support not only gymnastics, but performance across a wide range of sports.

Grace is NCCP Women's Artistic Gymnastics Foundations Certified, WAG Competition 1 Trained, and Foundations Trampoline Trained. She also holds Standard First Aid with CPR C.

Why IGNITE

The physical foundation every sport is built on.

Trail's competitive athletes are putting in the work every season. IGNITE gives them the physical platform to go further with it. Structured, twice-weekly sessions that build strength, speed, coordination, and movement quality across every sport, every season.

Built for Competitive Athletes

Designed for athletes already competing in hockey, skiing, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and more. IGNITE complements team practice rather than competing with it, and the physical gains carry across every sport on your athlete's schedule.

Coached the Right Way

Kian Johnston delivers the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific curriculum at every session. Technique comes before load, quality before quantity. Athletes learn to move correctly first, which reduces injury risk and builds the kind of confidence that shows up in competition.

Local, Right Here in Trail

Delivered at Elevate Athletics Trail, a facility built specifically for athlete development. Kian knows what local athletes are training toward, and has built a program that reflects it.

A Pathway, Not Just a Program

IGNITE is structured across progressive stages: Foundations, Aspire, and Perform. Athletes who start in Fall 2026 could follow the full pathway, with priority registration access at each stage along the way.

Multi-Sport Training

Built for athletes across every sport.

IGNITE is not designed for one sport. The physical foundations of strength, speed, coordination, and movement quality carry across every discipline your athlete competes in. Currently supporting athletes in 15 or more sports, including:

Hockey Soccer Alpine Skiing Basketball Volleyball Rugby Cycling Swimming Track and Field Snowboard Baseball Tennis Cross-Country Lacrosse Gymnastics And more
Frequently Asked Questions

Before you register, here are the answers parents ask for most.

What is IGNITE?
IGNITE is a structured athlete development program for competitive youth athletes ages 13 to 17, delivered by PacificSport Columbia Basin. In Trail, strength and conditioning sessions run at Elevate Athletics Trail under certified coach Kian Johnston, with the gymnastics component delivered by Coach Grace at Trail Gymnastics Club. It builds the physical foundations of strength, speed, coordination, and movement quality that support performance across all sports. The program is built on a curriculum developed by the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific.
Where does IGNITE train in Trail?
IGNITE Trail strength and conditioning sessions are delivered at Elevate Athletics Trail under coach Kian Johnston. Strength and conditioning sessions run Tuesday, 7:00 to 8:00 am, and Thursday, 7:15 to 8:15 am, beginning September 8, 2026. The gymnastics component is delivered at Trail Gymnastics Club.
Is strength training safe for a teenager?
Yes, when properly coached, and that is the key distinction. IGNITE introduces strength training the right way: technique before load, quality before quantity. Athletes learn how to move correctly first, which reduces injury risk rather than increasing it. Kian Johnston is certified in the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific curriculum and coaches with that progression at every session.
How is IGNITE different from my child's team practice?
Team practice develops sport skills. IGNITE develops the physical capacity to execute those skills faster, stronger, and with more control. The two are designed to work together. IGNITE runs twice a week and is specifically built to complement your child's existing sport commitments, not compete with them.
Is registration open and how much does it cost?
Registration is open now. The standard athlete fee is $600 per cohort. Families registering for both the Fall and Spring Foundations cohorts together could access the bundle rate of $1,100, a saving of $100. Strength and conditioning sessions run Tuesday and Thursday. The gymnastics component is held at Trail Gymnastics Club.
Can my child register if they are not on a provincial team?
Yes. IGNITE is designed for motivated competitive athletes who are ready to train with purpose, not only those identified for provincial or national programs. What matters is that your athlete is coachable, committed, and ready to put in the work.
Will this add too much to an already busy schedule?
IGNITE Trail strength and conditioning sessions run Tuesday, 7:00 to 8:00 am, and Thursday, 7:15 to 8:15 am. The gymnastics component is held at Trail Gymnastics Club. Sessions are built to fit around existing sport and school commitments. Many coaches actively recommend IGNITE because it makes their athletes better without asking them to give anything up.
What is the IGNITE Pathway and when can my athlete move to Aspire and Perform?
IGNITE has three progressive stages: Foundations, Aspire, and Perform. Athletes starting Fall 2026 begin with Foundations (Stage 1): Strength and Stability and finish with Foundations (Stage 1): Speed and Power in Spring 2027. After completing both Foundations cohorts, athletes could move into Aspire (Stage 2), with Foundations athletes receiving first access before general registration opens. Perform (Stage 3) follows Aspire, with details to be confirmed as the pathway progresses.
